Similar to getting a fresh eyebrow thread or painting your nails a new colour, a blow-dry gives you that feeling of being brand new. Yourself, but better. You, but on your A-game. So when HOB Salons, HAIR Awards Salon Group of the Year 2014, invited me down to their flagship branch in Camden to try their new Energy Blow-Dry, naturally, I jumped at the chance.
From the outset, I was intrigued to find out just what distinguished a standard blow-dry from the ‘Energy Blow-Dry’ which they are currently offering for the discounted price of £25 (usually £37). The real distinction lies within the unique ‘Energy Code’ that is formulated via asking the client a series of questions about their locks and specifically tailoring products to suit their hair.
Upon arrival, I was swiftly greeted by my stylist for the day Mike Mahoney who sat down with me and produced a Kindle-like tablet to begin a consultation session to find out more about my tresses. These were all simple questions such as what I like and dislike about my hair, how oily – greasy it is, how often I wash it, what the texture is like, how damaged it is, etc, and were all inputted into the tablet. From here, the answers given dictated four products it recommended including the basics of a shampoo right down to a treatment oil to finish. The products used as suggested by my Energy Code were :System Professional Smoothen Shampoo, System Professional Keratin Conditioning Cream, System Professional Volumize-Aerolifter Mousse and the System Professional Luxe Oil Reconstructive Elixir (not in picture).
Having never been brave enough to trust anyone other than my own hairdresser (Gabby of Aesthetics salon, Maldon) who I have been going to since I was 16, I was pleasantly surprised about how personal the whole experience was and how much detail is paid to ensuring your hair is given the best products that will specifically work for it.
After my hair had been washed, Mike then asked me what sort of look I wanted to achieve from my blow-dry and we decided on understated, loose waves for an effortless style. Throughout the session, Mike often told me about each product, how he was using it and tips on how to recreate the look myself which really added to the service and how much detail is paid to the client’s own hair.
I was really pleased with the end results and my hair felt and looked incredible afterwards. Typically, I wear my hair in natural waves/loose curls and it tends to get quite frizzy, so the outcome of a much more sleek and styled look was perfect. I would undoubtedly recommend the Energy-Blow-Dry to anyone as it’s very premise is to tailor the experience to each customer’s unique hairstyle, something you may not get in other salons when you walk in as a stranger.
