SUZIE MCGILL AND DYLAN BRITTAIN, RAINBOW ROOM INTERNATIONAL ARTISTIC DIRECTORS AND SALON OWNERS, UK SCHWARZKOPF AMBASSADORS AND CURRENT BHA SCOTTISH HAIRDRESSERS OF THE YEAR give us the lowdown on styles for the guys for summer 2018.

The trend for male grooming and the growing number of fashion-conscious men is on the rise due to men becoming more aware of their appearance. Male grooming has undergone something of a revival across the hair and beauty industry over the last few years, with hair care, beards and skincare the being the main focus. Men feel more attractive when they have well-groomed hair, and now find it important to follow hair trends when it comes to styling because of social media. Men are now more infused with celebrity styles and are keeping on top of trends, which is why men’s hair care is now booming because men are becoming more image conscious. In this column, we talk about the most on trend men’s hairstyle trends this year for men who want to see summer 2018 in style….

The buzz cut has been popular for the past couple of years now and remains popular for 2018. This style is a great style for accentuating the face shape and is a very popular and stylish look. With this cut it always looks best when the top is slightly longer and faded down shorter at the sides. As this style is not one uniform length the fade is important as you don’t want the style in skinhead territory and want it to look a little softer and less aggressive. This look suits most face shapes, however, for those with a rounder face, this looks great teamed with stubble, which will add definition to the jaws and cheeks.

Another men’s hair trend I love for 2018 is the afro, a style that never goes out of fashion! The afro is a clear statement of pride and self-acceptance and is one of the most versatile hairstyles. Fade haircuts work great for afro hair and look truly impressive. No other haircuts can give that fantastic fresh and clean feel that fades do and offer varied lengths for hair on the top with afro hair. One of my favourite styles for the afro is the geometric fade; it’s a cut that never goes out of style with its urban pulse and freedom for expression for straight or curly thick hair and it’s so practical. If a client’s hair is not naturally curly, backcombing or teasing the hair can create this look. Product is not required with this look; however, gels or hairspray can be used to maintain volume.

The quiff is always a hit for men! This is an extremely versatile hairstyle and is perfect for men who don’t want their hair to be too short. This hairstyle is also great as it can be worn both casually and smart, and it doesn’t require too much styling. However, the main element of styling for this look is blow-drying the hair properly to give the quiff volume. So if you like this look you may require some practise with a hairdryer in order for it to look its very best!

Lastly, long hair is another extremely popular men’s hairstyle this season. Leave your locks to air dry and apply some salt spray for some more texture and to give your hair that ‘just off the beach’ look.
