Bold, crazy colour for summer!

Colour is on the agenda in this month’s column from Suzie McGill and Dylan Brittain, salon owners and Artistic Directors of Rainbow Room International as well as UK Schwarzkopf Ambassadors and current BHA Scottish Hairdressers of the Year

The top hair colours for spring/summer 2018 are all about bright, bold crazy colour. 2018 is all about inventiveness and imagination when it comes to hair colour and a creative inspiration that is indigenous to the new Pantone of the Year, Ultra Violet. This blue-based galaxy purple gives hair a mystic vibe and dark hair looks stunning in bold jewel tones with a rich dark purple colour and no matter what your eye colour is, this hue is sure to make them stand out beautifully. Palace Blue is another Pantone colour for this year, and this shade we love on dark hair to create shine and a petrol effect – it’s a really great colour to add movement to the hair.

Metallic rose gold hair is a great hair colour option for blondes. The warm, faded tint is a great compromise between normal blonde highlights and a vibrant pink. We think this hair colour works best on blondes, as it will only produce a subtle sheen on dark hair, but does create shine and this really does look best with optimum hair shine. The rose gold hair colour is a mix of red and pink hues, and it’s a warm colour because of the red yet a cool hair colour because of the pink so that means that it can work with any skin tone and this dynamic hair colour can almost look strawberry blonde in the right light. Rose gold hair colour looks best when you style it with waves; it is undeniably chic with vintage finger curls, creating movement and volume.

Pink lavender is set to make a huge comeback this season, making an impact on many of the SS18 fashion runaways from big names like Alexander Wang. There are no boundaries when it comes to this colour trend, it can be matched to every skin type. Pink lavender is such a pretty pastel shade and is so versatile and flexible for clients, as it’s easy to get in and out of the hair and creates different tones when it fades. This hair trend can be made low maintenance and the colour can be updated on a weekly basis. If you don’t want this as an all-over colour, it also looks great when panelled through the hair. This hair colour looks great with a smoky effect too, having the colour stronger at the roots and faded out towards the ends.

Warm tones and more unconventional shades like golden blondes and meadowlark shades will be extremely popular into the warmer months. Meadowlark is the perfect hair colour for summer and is a mellower take on vibrant, sunshine yellow. This hair colour looks particularly great on a short, spiky cut for added edge. Going natural, warm tones like golden blonde, hazelnut brown and coppery reds are also trends that are set to be huge for the season, gorgeous shades that really compliment all skin tones.
